As you’re probably already aware, Black Myth: Wukong has exploded in China and other Mandarin speaking countries such as Taiwan. On launch day, the title peaked at almost 2.5 million concurrent players on PC platform Steam – before settling at a much less remarkable 200k when the region went to sleep. It’s anticipated that approximately 80 per cent of the game’s sales have been purchased domestically.
And considering the game is available on PS5 as well as PC, its success is having a huge impact on sales of Sony’s system in the region. Bloomberg reports that on Alibaba, PS5 doubled its sales in the week leading up to Black Myth: Wukong’s launch year-over-year. Furthermore, the format topped retailer Taobao’s hot search on launch day, underlining the demonstrable surge in demand.
China is generally more interested in mobile gaming, so this boost in console interest is unprecedented, and it shows the scale of the audience Sony is desperate to capture. While we don’t know how well Game Science’s debut has sold on PS5 just yet, the numbers are likely to be high – even if they’re ultimately a fraction of the PC total. It’s a reminder of why the China Hero Project is so important, and how there’s enormous potential for PlayStation which remains largely untapped.

China is heavily into mobile gaming….gross
I shall wait for a physical before playing
Is it really that surprising? Black Myth Wukong is based on a ancient Chinese novel called "Journey to the West". Of course a lot of Chinese people will play a game that is related to their history and culture.
@RagnarLothbrok Its not just China. Most of Asia is into mobile gaming. India, Nepal, many countries in Southeast Asia, and more.
I thought it was nonsense that the high concurrent Steam numbers could be geographical in nature, Sammy. I'm confused 🤔😁
Looks great, I welcome our new (AAA) chinese and korea overlord lol.
But seriously though, the western AAA gaming company needs to change if they still want to compete, especially in the single player games genre. And japanese company reeally need to think if it's worth it to take an esg/dei loans if it means changing their games. Remember forspoken and soon, concord.
Also we need ps5 price cut, like, yesterday, where's the cheaper $300 ps5 super slim.
The hilarious thing is that the main indicator of the game’s success all comes down to the fact that you can play it censorship free in China.
@riceNpea I believe I was replying to you about why that mattered. I never said it wasn't true, I don't think.
@get2sammyb you said what I said was nonsense so if that's not saying its untrue I don't know what is 😄👍
I don't care, I'm joking with you 😌
Wait, so good games sell consoles!?
Someone should say that to Microsoft lmao
Nice! I'd like to see more eastern developers make games. As they don't cater to "modern audiences" for their entertainment.
@WhiteRabbit Baldur's Gate 3 is another one.
@Cloud39472 China is a massive market. If it sells well there what happens in the rest of the world is pure gravy.
@IOI Good games sell consoles.
Good FIRST PARTY exclusives also sell consoles too.
Only Nintendo and PlayStation actually understand this strategy/idea/mentality. Microsoft does not.
I put about 5 hours into the game so far and it's really good, so I'm not surprised it's moving a lot of consoles.
@WhiteRabbit You might as well be talking to a brick wall. These idiots have nothing, just burning hatred for ‘the woke’.
80% of sales....jeeze, the China games bubble is even bigger than Nintendo's Japan bubble.
@Cloud39472 Remember it's also been given away with every retail packaged Nvidia GPU sold in the past month. Assuming that counts in the sales figures like PS5 bundles with HFW did, the China tilt in sales is even more extreme than at first glance! Almost to the point of wondering if it was worth releasing outside China at all.
@jrt87 Tbh I thought you meant BMW the German automaker for a second.
@whiterabbit I get that you hate China/CCP/anything that isn’t a U.S. vessel, but what does it have to do with sales of PS5 and the sales of a game?
@anoyonmus and me lol. China don’t need BMW anyway they just copy and paste (I’ve seen the top gear episode 😂)
@wiiware Helldivers 2 is one of the biggest games this year and its western, BG3 is one of the most celebrated games ever made and its western. You also don't even know who Sweet Baby are and what they do.
@WhiteRabbit I think he means you hate Chyna because HHH split up with her. He's assuming you're a big HHH fan.
@nessisonett PQ really need to crackdown on those accounts. All they do is come on to troll and cause trouble.
Happy for everyone who has been looking forward to this game. I'm especially intrigued to see that a Chinese game that isn't anime focused is doing well.
@wiiware Outside EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, WB, and MS, i don't think every western companies needs to change drastically just because some Chinese and Korean devs got their hits.
I mean, GTA 6 sales definitely gonna make Black Wukong sales looks like a walk in the park. There's also Activision with COD which the series still sold gangbusters year in-year out and i'm sure Blops 6 will sold more than Black Wukong. Or CDPR, Larian, and some Sony western studios like ND, Insomniac, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, and Guerilla they are still did very well too.
As for Japan devs, i think they will do just fine like Capcom, Nintendo, SE, Bamco, From Soft, Sega / Atlus, SNK, or ArcSys.
I wouldn't be surprised if ps5 ends up selling more in China than it does in Japan by the end of the Generation. Although I have no idea how well the ps4 did in China? But I think Asian markets could help make up for the slight decline in sales from Europe this Generation. Although this comment is probably more suited to a site like vgchartz 🤔 😂
Although to be honest this is the only gaming site I bother to make comments on. I did at one point make comments on n4g but I got banned for making a comment that offended a xbox fanboy, but I can't even remember what I said but I'm sure it wasn't anything too bad 🤷♂️

It’s funny how because it’s a Chinese made game people suddenly care where the most sales are and who is/isn’t playing it.
Nobody ever brings up where the most CoD/mario/BG3/any other game players are from.
@jrt87 I was just about to say the same thing.
The same thing happened to steller blade, just because the anti-sjw clung onto the game before the release, the other side started downplaying the game, by only fousing on its caviets, and other degrading claims. Making remarks like "This game is just porn", "I have not seen anything gameplay related of this, only porn" " this game is sexist, problematic, and for chuds, because the main character looks conveniently attractive and like a doll","Eve is a terrible attractive character, since she will never be deep like 2B and Bayonetta".
The same thing is happening to BMW.
Which is sad, because this two games both comes from indie company's as their first try into the AAA market,as they help to push the boundaries of gaming in their home country(South Korea and China). Which should be celebrated, instead of being put down constantly.
Both games aren't perfect, and they have flaws, but this are the indie studios first,so please don't let your hatered for the other side fuel how you feel about this games.
I am loving it! Everything I imagined/wanted it to be so far... spent about an hour trying to take down the Wandering Wight right off the bat (which I did and the dopamine hit was real!!). Despite having elements that feel familiar, the game feels so unusual and special. The boss design is unreal. I'm so excited about the AAA future now this is out and games like Phantom Blade Zero are on the horizon.
